Summer Recap

With Princeton's long summers, it's the perfect time to take advantage of internship opportunities and study abroad programs.  We encourage our players to take an internship or study abroad at least one summer during their time at Princeton.  This summer a two rising juniors did internships from California to New York and one studied abroad in France.

Lizzy Pierce had an internship with Sports Illustrated in New York City from June to August.  She was an editorial intern that fact-checked the articles for the magazine and special edition issues.  She also had the opportunity to interview many athletes while working on a project with a senior writer.  Lizzy said it was amazing to work at company centered around her favorite topic, sports!  However, the best thing about Sports Illustrated to her was the people she worked with.  They were so friendly, personal, and welcoming, helping the long hours pass quickly.  Lizzy lived in a quad in the Columbia Dorms, where all the Time Inc interns were housed.  She loved living in the city and is hoping to be able to live there next summer.

Liza Kuhn studied abroad in Paris, France.  She took a course called "The Figure of the Parisian Flaneur" which was offered through Fordham University.  She spent a month there and lived with a host family in an apartment in Neuilly-sur-Seine (a sub-section of Paris).  The class was focused on learning about Paris's culture and history, and how it has changed and evolved from the 17th century through the Paris of today. From Monday through Thursday Liza had 3 hours of class, followed by an additional two hours in the streets of Paris where  she saw first-hand what they had discussed from their readings.  She also had weekly operas/theatre pieces to attend, as well as other trips to museums and various neighborhoods of Paris. The course was taught completely in French, and she was only allowed to speak French in class, with her host families and with her friends.  The most difficult adjustment for Liza was training her brain to think and speak in French.  Her favorite part of studying abroad was proving to herself that she could live in a foreign country and speak only their language.  She also made tremendous progress with her fluency, which was so exciting!

Candy Button did an internship with Facebook in Palo Alto, CA.  Her internship ran from the end of May to mid August.  She lived in a corporate housing apartment in Santa Clara with three other interns, two of them from Princeton.  Candy was a software engineering intern for the photos team where she helped build cool new features for the website.  The most difficult adjustment for her was having to support her changes to the live website.  When her code broke something on the site she basically had the whole company breathing down her neck until she fixed it.  Candy loved being able to work on something that her family and friends use everyday.  Her favorite part was when she could point at her friend's computer screen and say, "Look at this thing I added!" talking about the close button on the new white photo viewer on the website.
