UMBC Tournament

The Tigers started off their season going 1-2 at the UMBC tournament this past weekend.  They fell to Siena 2-0 in their opener.  The Tigers threatened in the 1st inning with a leadoff single by Nicole Ontiveros, followed by a walk from Candy Button.  However, the next three batters were retired.  Even though there were only two hits for the team, the girls had some solid cuts producing line drives right at the Siena defenders.  Michelle Tolfa started in the cricle, giving up two hits,one  run, and striking out three.  Liza Kuhn came on in relief in the 5th inning, giving up three hits and one run.

In the next game of the tournament against Iona, the Tigers looked much more comfortable on the field in their 7-6 win.  The offense exploded out to a 6-0 lead which held until the 6th.  Tory Roberts celebrated her birhtday by going 3-4 with 5 RBI and her first career home run, a grand slam.  Nikki Chu and Sarah Rounsifer each added 2 hits.  Alex Peyton pitched a complete game and held Iona's offense through 5 innings.  Iona was able to score three runs in both the 6th and 7th inning.  With the game tied up going into the bottom of the 7th, Megan Weidrick reached on a error followed by a Roberts single.  Rounsifer put down a key sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position.  Kelsey VandeBergh then came up with the game winning single for the Tigers.

The Tigers dropped their last game to Liberty 8-2.  Tolfa started once again, going 5 innings giving up four hits, two runs, and striking out six.  Liberty jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but the Tigers were able to pull ahead 2-1 in the 4th with a bases loaded single by Weidrick.  Liberty tied it up in the 5th then pulled ahead 3-2 in the 6th.  Kuhn came on in the 6th and suffered the loss for the Tigers.

 The team returns to action this weekend at the Virginia Invitational against UVA, Fordham, and Syracuse.
