Columbia Series

The Tigers split a 4 game series against Columbia this past weekend.  Princeton took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning of game one when Nicole Ontiveros led off with a walk, Cara Worden followed with a sac bunt, then Kelsey VandeBergh singled to left field and Ontiveros scored on an error by the left fielder.  Alex Peyton kept the Lions hitless until the 5th when they tied it up off of one hit and a Tiger error.  Columbia pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the 7th on a squeeze play.  Peyton finished the game giving up just 3 hits and striking out 2.  VandeBergh had 2 of the Tigers' 3 hits.

Game two was another one run decision, with the Tigers coming out on top 3-2.  Ontiveros led off the game with an infield single.  Worden then grounded out, moving Ontiveros to second.  VandeBergh singled and advanced to second on the throw.  Maddie Cousens then came up with a 2 out, 2 RBI single.  The Lions got on the board in the 4th aided by a Tiger error and a single.  Columbia tied it up in the 6th with a single, followed by a wild pitch advancing the runner to second and then another single to make it 2-2.  The Tigers were able to capitalize on 2 Columbia errors that put a runner in scoring position for Sarah McGowan, who hit the game winning RBI single.  The Lions were able to get runners on first and third with only one out in the 7th, but Liza Kuhn was able to strike out the last two batters to get the win.

Game three of the series was scoreless until the 6th inning when the Tigers put up 2 runs on the board.  VandeBergh led off with a double and Peyton reached on an error.  Cousens followed with a walk to load the bases.  McGowan drew a walk to score the first run and Candy Button drew another walk two batters later to score another run.  The Tigers were unable to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities, stranding 11 runners total.  Peyton pitched the 2-0 shutout, scattering 5 hits and striking out 4.

The Tigers scored first again, getting one run in the 1st off a Peyton RBI single.  Their lead was short lived as the Lions responded with a 3 run homer in the bottom half.  Columbia added a run both in the 2nd and 3rd, making their lead 5-1.  McGowan hit a solo home run in the 4th to cut the Lions' lead 5-2.  Columbia scored 3 more runs in the 5th off of 3 hits and an error which would prove to be enough for the 8-2 win.  The Tigers out-hit the Lions but again were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, stranding 10 runners.

Princeton will travel to Hofstra on Tuesday for a single game and then will play host to Cornell for a 4 game series this weekend which will be seniors Ontiveros and VandeBergh's last home games.
