Ivy South Opener

The Tigers opened up divisional play against Penn last weekend, going 1-3 in the 4 game series.  Liza Kuhn started game one for Princeton and held the Quakers to just one hit through the first 6 innings.  However, Penn was able to explode for 8 runs in the top of the 7th off of 7 hits, 3 of them home runs.  The Tigers had scoring opportunities in the 4th and 6th with runners on second and third and no outs, but came up empty both times.  Kelsey VandeBergh lead the Tiger offense going 2-2 with a walk.

Penn jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring a run in both the 1st and 3rd innings.  Princeton responded with a run in the bottom of the 3rd when Nikki Chu singled and advanced to second on an error, then Nicole Ontiveros hit an RBI single up the middle.  Alex Peyton led off the 4th innings with a single to center field.   Maddie Cousens followed with a double to right center and Candy Button came up with an RBI single one batter later to tie it up.  Rachel Rendina reached on a Penn fielding error, allowing a run to score and the Tigers to take a 3-2 lead.  Princeton added one more insurance run in the 5th with an RBI single from Cousens.  Penn added a run in the 6th, making it 4-3 but Peyton was able to close out the game and pick up the win for the Tigers.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning with back to back singles from Ontiveros and Cara Worden followed by a 2 out RBI single from Cousens.  Their lead was short lived as Penn tied it up in the 2nd off of 2 hits and a Tiger error.  The Quakers jumped ahead 3-1 in the 4th off of 3 singles and a walk and added one more run in the 7th to go ahead 4-1.  The Tigers were unable to put together a rally and Peyton suffered the loss in the circle.

The Quakers got on the board in the 1st with a 2 out, 3 run home run.  Princeton then scored a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st.  Ontiveros led off with a single, followed by a sac bunt from Cousens, a single from VandeBergh and an RBI single from Peyton.  Penn added 2 runs in the 6th, taking a 5-1 lead.  After scoring in the 1st inning, the Tigers were kept to just one hit, which came from Sarah McGowan in the bottom of the 7th.

The Tigers take on Lehigh in a double header tomorrow and travel to Columbia this weekend for a 4 game series.
