Yale - Brown

The Tigers started off their weekend with a sweep against Yale.  In game one, the Tigers got on the board in the 2nd inning when Maddie Cousens led off with a walk and Tory Roberts followed with an RBI double.  Two batters later Nicole Ontiveros hit an RBI double, putting the Tigers up 2-0.  Princeton added 2 more runs in the top of the 4th when Candy Button doubled, followed by an RBI single from Lizzy Pierce and an RBI single from Kelsey VandeBergh.  Yale scored one run in the 4th off of 2 hits.  In the top of the 7th, VandeBergh led off with a single and Alex Peyton got on via a Bulldog error.  Cousens then hit an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Roberts, making the lead 6-1.  Yale added 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th off of 2 hits and one Tiger error.  Peyton got the win for the Tigers, striking out 4 and scattering 8 hits.

Princeton took an early lead in the 2nd inning again in game two when Peyton led off with a double, followed by a sac bunt from Cara Worden and an RBI single from Cousens.  The Tigers added 2 more runs in the 5th off a single from Pierce, a triple from Alyssa Schmidt and two Yale errors.  The Bulldogs responded with 2 runs of their own in the 5th off of 3 hits.  Peyton led off the 6th with a single and was followed by a sac bunt from Worden and an RBI double from Roberts.  The Tigers added some insurance runs thanks to a 2 run home run from VandeBergh, making the lead 6-2.  Yale attempted to comeback in the 7th when they scored 2 runs off of 3 hits, but starter Liza Kuhn was able to end the threat and pick up the 6-4 win.  Kuhn finished with a career high 13 strike outs.

The Tigers ended the weekend with a split against Brown, taking game one 6-5 then dropping an 11 inning heartbreaker 1-2.  The Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd off of 2 hits.  Princeton got on the board in the 4th with a triple from Schmidt followed by VandeBergh's second 2 run home run of the weekend.  The Tigers took a 4-1 lead in the 5th off of RBI singles from Nicole Ontiveros and Peyton.  Brown then regained the lead, 4-5, in the bottom of the 6th by capitalizing on 2 Tiger errors and hitting a 3 run home run.  Princeton was able to reclaim the lead in the 7th when Roberts singled with the bases loaded, bringing in 2 runs.  Peyton went the distance in the circle for the Tigers and picked up the win.

Princeton starter Kuhn battled with Bears' pitcher Jessica Cherniss for 11 innings in game two.  The Tigers were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities they had in the 1st, 6th, 7th, and 8th, stranding a total of 11 baserunners.  The Tigers broke the 0-0 tie in the 10th when Ontiveros led off with a bunt single and Schmidt followed with a sac bunt.  Then VandeBergh advanced Ontiveros to third with a groundout and Peyton scored her with a double.  With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, the Bears hit a solo home run to tie it up.  With two outs again in the bottom of the 11th, the Bears hit a walk off home run to end the game.

The Tigers sit at 5-3 in the Ivy League and are 2 games back from Cornell.  Princeton will host LaSalle for a doubleheader on Thursday at 3:30pm before they host a 4 game divisional series against Penn this weekend.
