Ivy play heads North

The Tigers split both double headers this past weekend at Harvard and Dartmouth.  They remain one game behind Ivy South leaders Cornell, and are ahead of Penn (2-6) and Columbia (1-7).  Princeton dropped the first game to Harvard 7-0.  The Crimson was able to jump out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings and kept the Tiger bats to only 2 hits. 

After coming on in relief in the 3rd inning in game one, Alex Peyton pitched the complete game win for the Tigers in game two.  Peyton recorded 11 strike outs on the day and gave up 3 earned runs between both games.

The Tigers trailed 1-0 going into the top of the 7th inning.  Candy Button lead off with an infield single, and was followed by a single through the left side by Kelsey VandeBergh.  Peyton hit a single to left field, plating Button to tie it up.  Lizzy Pierce then hit a double to score the go ahead run.  Tory Roberts followed with an RBI double of her own giving the Tigers a necessary insurance run to take the lead 3-1.  After the five hit rally, the Crimson was able to end the threat.  In the bottom of the 7th Harvard hit a solo home run with two outs but Peyton was able to get the next batter to ground out for the last out of the game.

Princeton had to rally in game one from a 6-0 deficit that Dartmouth produced off of starter Michelle Tolfa.  In the top of the 6th, Roberts started the rally with a one out single.  Maddie Cousens followed with a walk.  The Tigers took advantage of a Dartmouth error that allowed Roberts to score and put runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Austin Sanders drew a walk to load the bases.  Nicole Ontiveros hit a hard grounder to second base that was able to score a run but Dartmouth got a force out at 2nd.  The Tigers added another run off a wild pitch.  Button then hit a 2 run home run to put the Tigers just one run behind at 6-5.

Dartmouth added a solo home run in the bottom of the 6th to make their lead 7-5.  Peyton lead off the top of the 7th with a single through the left side.  Pierce followed with a line shot that the second baseman was unable to handle.  Roberts hit a ball to right field that was mishandled and allowed Peyton to score.  Cousens then hit an infield single that scored the tying run.  Sarah Rounsifer hit a ground ball to second base and the Tigers once again capitalized on a Dartmouth error, scoring the go ahead run.  Sanders continued the rally with a bunt single, loading the bases.  Cousens was able to score on a wild pitch, making the lead 9-7.

Dartmouth started the bottom of the 7th with a lead off walk followed by a bloop single.  Reliever Liza Kuhn was able to retire the next two batters.  However, the Tigers we unable to close it out as the Big Green got a pair of two-out hits to score 3 runs and win the game.

Peyton took the mound for the Tigers in game two and picked up her second win of the weekend, striking out 4 and giving up only 4 hits.  Princeton broke through in the 6th with a lead off single by Pierce, her third hit of the game.  Roberts then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Pierce to second.  Rounsifer hit a shot to left-center field to score Pierce and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.  Peyton and the defense were able to shut down the Big Green in the 6th and 7th to record the win.
