Tigers Take on Columbia

The Tigers suffered another frustrating divisional series, going 1-3 against Columbia in a pair of doubleheaders.  Princeton fell short in game one 5-3 followed by a 2-0 loss in which the Tigers were hitless.  They suffered another tough loss in game three, 7-5.  However, the Tigers were able to fight back and take game four with a 5-2 win, leaving them at 5-11 in league.

In game one, Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning off a Megan Weidrick RBI single and a Nicole Ontiveros 2 RBI double.  The lead held until the 5th inning when Columbia came back to tie it up off 3 hits and 2 Tiger errors.  The Lions rallied again in the 6th with two outs, scoring 2 runs off 2 hits and another Tiger miscue.  Princeton threatened in the bottom of the 7th, but ended the game with the bases loaded.  Michelle Tolfa pitched all 7 innnings, striking out 4 and giving up only 2 earned runs.

Columbia was near perfect in game two, giving up no hits and allowing only 3 Tiger base runners.  The Lions were able to score a run in both the 3rd and 5th, which was all they needed for the win.

The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game three off an Alex Peyton RBI double.  However, Columbia was able to rally with two outs in the 4th to score 7 runs off of 5 hits and one error.  Princeton answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th off a Lizzy Pierce solo home run and an Ontiveros 2 RBI double, cutting the Lion's lead 7-4.  The Tigers fell short of the comeback and were only able to add one run in the 6th from an RBI single from Sarah Rounsifer.

Princeton struck first again in game four.  Peyton lead off the 2nd inning with a single to left field.  Pierce then blasted her second home run of the day, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  Columbia responded in the top of the 3rd, scoring 2 runs off of 4 hits, again with two outs.  The Tigers rallied in the 6th to break the tie.  Austin Sanders lead off with a bunt single.  Kelsey VandeBergh followed with a single to center field.  Peyton loaded the bases with a fielder's choice.  Pierce then hit the ball back to the pitcher and the Lions tried for the home to first double play, but a throwing error allowed Pierce to reach safely and a run to score.  With runners on second and third Tory Roberts grounded out to score another run.  Candy Button then hit an RBI single to make the lead 5-2.  Peyton was able to retire the Lions in order in the 7th to pick up the win.

The Tigers wrap up their season this weekend against Cornell with a home doubleheader on Friday and an away doubleheader on Sunday.  Seniors Megan Weidrick and Michelle Tolfa will be honored as they play their final games at 1895 Field on Friday.
