Ivy Opener

The Tigers opened up Ivy play against North Division foes Brown and Yale this past weekend.  They split both double headers, leaving them one game behind South Division leaders Cornell (3-1), tied with Penn (2-2), and two games ahead of Columbia (0-4).

In game one against Brown, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead off of a Lizzy Pierce sacrifice fly in the 1st inning and a Megan Weidrick RBI single in the 4th inning.  Brown was able to tie it up by scoring a run in both the 5th and 6th innings and eventually went ahead 4-2 in the 7th off a 2 run home run.

Nicole Ontiveros started a 1 out rally in the bottom of the 7th with an infield single.  Candy Button followed with another infield single.  Kelsey VandeBergh ripped a hard ground ball that hit off the shortstop and went to the fence, allowing Ontiveros and Button to score, keeping the Tigers alive.  Brown was able to end the threat and force the game into the 8th.

Liza Kuhn came on in relief in the top of the 8th with a runner on second.  Kuhn got the next two batters to ground out and strike out.  The Tigers ended the threat with VandeBergh making a diving catch on a foul ball for the third out.  In the bottom of the 8th, Sarah Rounsifer hit a one out single up the middle.  Weidrick followed with a single to center field.  Ontiveros then had the game-winning single to right field, plating Rounsifer for the 5-4 win.  Alex Peyton went 7 innings for the Tigers, giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 3.  Kuhn picked up the win.

The Tigers took a 3-1 lead into the top of the 5th in game two.  Brown rallied with 2 outs in the 5th to score 4 runs off of 5 hits and 1 error, taking the lead 5-3.  Brown added 3 more runs in the 6th off a 3 run home run.  Princeton was only able to score 1 run in the bottom of the 7th off an Ontiveros home run.  Kuhn took the loss for the Tigers, going 5 innings giving up 4 earned runs and striking out 5.

Princeton saw Yale take the lead in game one on Sunday with a 7 run 3rd inning off of 6 hits and 1 error.  Yale added 2 more runs in the 6th to go ahead 9-0.  The Tigers weren't able to get their offense going, only mustering 3 hits for the game.

In game two, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the 1st off Peyton and Pierce RBI singles.  Yale answered in the 2nd with one run.  The Tigers exploded for 7 runs in the bottom of the 4th.  Austin Sanders lead off with a single to left field.  Ontiveros and Button both drew walks, loading the bases.  VandeBergh then blasted her 2nd grand slam of the season over the left field fence.

Peyton started it up again with a single to left field.  Pierce followed with a walk and Tory Roberts loaded the bases again for the Tigers with a single to left field.  Pierce scored on a wild pitch then Maddie Cousens singled up the middle scoring Roberts.  Ontiveros added an RBI single to push the Tigers ahead 9-1 going into the top of the 5th.

Yale kept the game alive by rallying for 7 runs in the 5th off 6 hits and 1 error.  Princeton added 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th off a Pierce RBI single and a Cousens 2 RBI double.  In the top of the 6th Yale was able to score 2 runs to cut the Tigers' lead to 12-10.  Princeton was 1 out away from ending the game, but Yale was able to score 2 more runs in the 7th to tie it up.  With a 2-1 count, Rounsifer hit a walk-off home run over the center field fence to give the Tigers the 13-12 win.  Kuhn picked up her second win on the weekend.
